Holiday apartments in Bremen: the honest guide

An apartment pays off faster in Bremen than in most cities. This is not a checklist destination but a city of neighbourhoods, weekly markets and riverbanks — everyday life, best experienced from a flat of your own. Here's how to choose one well.

When an apartment beats a hotel

From about three nights, for families, for trade-fair and hospital stays, and for anyone who prefers making their own morning coffee: in these cases the apartment wins almost every time — always on space, often on price per person. For a single night with an early departure, a hotel by the station remains the more practical call.

Where the good apartments are

The Viertel (Ostertor & Steintor)

Bremen's favourite guest neighbourhood: high-ceilinged Altbau flats with cafés, indie cinemas and pubs on the doorstep. Ideal if you want the urban, creative Bremen. The trade-off: scarce parking and lively weekend nights.

Neustadt (the left bank)

One bridge from the old town and visibly blossoming: a weekly market, small shops, calm residential streets. Often the best value in the city — and still a 10–15 minute walk to the market square.

Findorff

Composed and green, framed by the Bürgerpark and the exhibition grounds. First choice for trade-fair visitors who'd rather not pay fair-week hotel rates, and for families who like a park on the doorstep.

Überseestadt

The new harbour quarter: modern serviced apartments instead of Altbau, water in every direction. Good for longer working stays; slightly out of the way for sightseeing, but connected by tram.

Private or professional?

Private rentals tend to be more individual and cheaper, but demand flexibility around key handover and fittings. Professionally managed apartments offer predictable standards, proper invoices and usually self-check-in. For stays of several weeks or months, Bremen has a well-developed furnished-apartment market with monthly billing — especially in the Überseestadt and near the technology parks.

Mind the city tax: Bremen levies a tourism tax on private overnight stays; business travellers are exempt with proof. Reputable hosts state the tax transparently — if there's no mention of it at all, treat that as a warning sign.
